SLAM that Phishing Email

You may know the SLAM technique as STOP LOOK ASSESS MANAGE. This is a good technique to use when you are faced with an unexpected email.  We have another SLAM to help you identify phishing.

STOP LOOK and ASSESS the email using another SLAM technique!

SENDER

  1. Do you know the sender? Even if you do, it can still be a scam.
  2. Does the Name match the Email Address? Often time the domain address is changed by just 1 letter to spoof a well-known domain like amazon.com or annazon.com
  3. Watch out – on your phone this is harder to see. If you view a suspicious email on your phone, don’t take any action until you can verify.

LINKS

Hyperlinks masks the real URL – hover over the link to see where it will take you. Often scam links will have odd and unusual domains. Basically, don’t click on links.

ATTACHMENTS

Don’t open attachments from unknown senders or ones you didn’t expect.

MESSAGE

Does the message have urgency? STOP, don’t act until you verify it by phone to the sender. A boss’s email may be compromised and if the request is not expected, call to verify.

To MANAGE the phishing email, warn others of the email. Check with your IT department to make sure they do not want to see it. Otherwise, you can simply delete it.
